Men’s Fall Fashion Trends: Five Essential Colours to Wear This Season

Pink, crimson and purple are ready to play a starring role in your fall wardrobe.

My dreams for my closet were never in black and white. When I was in high school, I’d spend the waking hours filling my head with colourful video clips from Fashion TV and my shopping cart with every colour of the rainbow. Colour brought meaning to my life when I needed it most. It was my escape from the grey mundanity of suburban life. It promised something bigger and unexpected.

With my suburb days long behind me, I never imagined I’d fall back into the colourless closet I was trying to escape from. What Fashion TV didn’t prepare me for is how easy it is to wake up one day with a wardrobe full of inoffensive colours. Perhaps it’s a symptom of workplace uniformity or an outcome of my efforts to save money with clothes that fit all occasions. Maybe it’s a metaphor for my fear of not fitting in. These pressures taught me to make myself (and my closet) quieter.

But I’m ready to say “screw that.” And with colour making a big comeback this fall—a season where monotones usually rule—there’s no better time to do so.

The return of saturation to men’s sartorialism is a bold statement, an antithesis to making oneself smaller. It gives men the space to break away from repressive ideas of what makes a colour “manly,” to dress in a way that’s more unique to them. Stow away your navy, black and grey pieces and make room for the colours that will keep you in good spirits all season long.

Pink

Pink is usually canonized as “cute,” but this fall, designers are showing that there’s more to this colour than meets the eye. Dior used a pale shade to give classic pieces like military and bomber jackets a more dynamic and elevated look.

At Kenzo, creative director Nigo used the colour’s playfulness as a way to amplify otherwise quieter pieces, like dress shirts and knit vests.

At the Venice premiere of his new film In the Hand of Dante, Oscar Isaac jumped on the trend early by contrasting a black tee with a matching pant suit in a pale blush tone.

A good starter kit if you want to give pink a chance this fall: take the laidback route with GAP’s pleated trousers or Dime’s unisex waffle knit hoodie. If you’re ready to jump head-first, go bold with the dark pink tiger print ‘Yusuke’ camp shirt from Kardo.

Brown

Before you cue the Miranda Priestly eye-roll (Browns for fall? Groundbreaking, I know), discover how this season makes the colour pop in new ways. At Prada, Miuccia and Raf Simons changed the narrative by using brown in disruptive, avant-garde designs like their strangely-grafted faux-fur coats. The reinvention continues at Sacai, where the colour’s industrial and luxurious vibes meet in outfits that blend chocolatey cargos with caramel knit sweaters for a cozy, functional look.

Brands like Fear of God and Saint Laurent lean into the decadence of brown with refined trench coats and double breasted blazers that echo the office-ready elegance of the 1980’s.

For a suave-casual look like MGK’s recent New York Fashion Week appearance, try styling a corduroy ball cap from Ralph Lauren, knit polo from Beams Plus, with light brown trousers from Abercrombie & Fitch for a colour-schematic look.

Crimson

Just in time for the darkest season comes a deliciously eerie colour: bold, sensual and poetic crimson. Your first instinct when seeing the bloody colour might be to cover your eyes, but like any good gore flick, it’s too intriguing to turn away from. This is what makes crimson work so well for both horror and our closets: its ability to shock and seduce. It can pull off startled innocence (think Steven Yeun’s cartoonish cowboy suit in Nope versus…) and captivating maturity (Gary Oldman’s ornate satin robes in Dracula) all at once.

Willy Chavarria showcases the duality in his collection of velvet zoot suits and track jackets, bridging the gap between street and formalwear. Bluemarble provokes with playfully oversized silhouettes. while No. 21 and Hermes keep it subtle with boot cut trousers and shiny short coats.

The summer skies might have come and gone, but your love for them doesn’t have to. By incorporating light blues into your closet, you can turn any frigid day into one that’s bright and sunny. Andrew Garfield can’t get enough of the colour, giving two sneak peeks of Jonathan Anderson’s blue-hued Dior at the Venice photocall and premiere of After the Hunt

The colour plays a supporting role in Louis Vuitton’s fall collection, colouring faux-crocodile bags and light jackets in a vibrant shade of sky blue.

Purple

When I think of wearing purple, I think back to times when I tried to rock it in the 2010s (and failed miserably). The fact is, purple is an anomaly of a colour, shrouded in mysteries that are hard to solve. For that reason, to wear it says to the world that you contain multitudes—that’s a fashion challenge worth taking.

Kidsuper Studios’ fall collection reveals that the secret of styling purple is to approach it with a vintage sensibility. The biker jackets and trench coats are coloured with patchwork mulberry and violet for a 1970s boho feel. Across the Atlantic, deep magenta possessed the velvet blazers and polo shirts at Amiri with a sophisticated, old Hollywood aura.
