Introducing our next FASHION + Music guest editor: MuchMusic VJ Sarah Taylor

My closest friends know that every time the seasons change I become a little extra romantic, nostalgic and dreamy while inevitably proclaiming the upcoming season to be my favorite of all time. I’m unaffected by their long eye rolls and I usually take comfort in the current musical soundtrack of my life in those moments. They always seem to punctuate my thoughts and emotions in a much more beautiful and graceful way than whatever reality could ever deliver.

Best to wake up, go to sleep, or fall in love to: Bruce Springsteen, Darkness on the Edge of Town

TIFF is always an electric time of year for Toronto and this year I gravitated toward the cool, edgy, thoughtful city cowboy vibe I caught from watching Thom Zimny’s The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town.

I have been obsessed with ’70s Bruce Springsteen since I first saw his videos on MuchMusic, and I usually gravitate between being in love with the person I’ve imagined him to be and just actually wanting to be him. His romantic, boyish, blue collar outsider thing is charming enough but when you pair that with a haunting voice and a ridiculous back up band it’s over. Watching the documentary, you get a different side of Bruce, how he works in the studio and how much of a genius he really is. Needless to say, the record is on repeat in my life now and probably will be forever. Now I understand what The Killers were really talking about.

Best to walk, bike, and pontificate to: Shad, TSOL
I had the honour of co-hosting the 2010 Polaris Music Prize gala once again this year and felt so humble to be in the company of some of Canada’s most talented, brightest and celebrated minds, all the while discovering some new favorites. Karkwa walked away the prize, which must have been a tough decision since I loved parts of all the albums I listened to out of the incredible short list (which included Tegan and Sara, Owen Pallett, Caribou and Broken Social Scene). Having said that, my favourite of this year was definitely Shad’s TSOL. This album is the Ontario-native at his best, and cements his place as one of Canada’s best MCs. His rhymes are quick, thoughtful, and catchy enough to stay in your head for days–in a good way. Canadian hip-hop at it’s best.

Best to make love and war to: Robyn, Body Talk Pt. 2
Robyn continues to be my favorite pop star, and when I caught her opening gig for Keane this past year I realized it’s not just because of slick production and glossy videos. She appears to be the real deal. She sings about the exquisite pain of heartbreak with honesty and dances her ass off at the same time. With this record you’ll want to get in on it. My late night dancing-alone-in-the-dark sessions in my apartment are usually reserved for Joy Division, but for whatever reason Body Talk Pt. 2 has made the list.
