How to style a cardigan and not look like a granny

Cardigans have always had a special place in my heart. I wore a white snap front to my Bat Mitzvah, a soft pastel green to my older sister’s pre-prom party, and last summer I spent months looking for the perfect pale blue to top my shoulders at an outdoor wedding.

Traditionally, when we think of cardigans we associate them with librarians and Mr. Rogers. They haven’t made a real fashion statement since the ’90s, with on-screen-characters-turned-fashion-icons like Cher Horowitz serving as a poster child for the trend. However, the Fall 2016 runways proved otherwise. In Milan, the conservative sweater set made its comeback on Miu Miu’s runway, which left us inspired and ready tackle the trend.

In order to keep the look updated and steer clear from venturing off into granny territory, we suggest mixing and matching contrasting prints. Playing with proportions is also key; keeping things slim on top and coupling your sweater set with wide pants or culottes. Look for an interesting waist line, like a paper-bag tie, to modernize the look. In addition, draping your cardi over your shoulders (à la Anna Wintour) is not only easy but super classic and chic. Lastly, and one of my favourite tips, is to turn it around and wear it backwards. Popping open a few of the bottom buttons creates an upside-down V shape that reveals a subtle sliver of skin.
