Here’s What We Would Have Asked Actors on the Golden Globes Red Carpet
At this Sunday’s Golden Globes, actors of all genders banded together in solidarity by wearing black. It’s the industry’s way of showing support for victims of sexual harassment and to promote awareness about the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund. This comes three years after the #AskHerMore hashtag campaign was started by Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls organization, which encouraged reporters to ask actresses on the red carpet about more than their designer dresses. So, we suspect the once ubiquitous “Who are you wearing?” will not be the de rigueur question of the night in this post-Weinstein era. No longer will the awards show be a source of flashy entertainment; this Sunday, the Golden Globes are expected to be a more serious, sombre and political affair.
Time’s Up has reportedly provided talking points for the red carpet coverage, but to help things along, the FASHION team has devised a list of 12 questions that can be asked on red carpets going forward. Ryan, Giuliana, et al., feel free to take any or all of our suggestions.
- Fashion is being used tonight to show a moment of solidarity rather than to exclusively make a fashion statement. Why did you choose the dress/suit you’re wearing tonight?
- Is there any symbolism or meaning behind any of the accessories you’ve chosen to wear tonight?
- The top three box office films of 2017 (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Beauty and the Beast, and Wonder Woman) had female leads. Do you think their success will propel Hollywood studios to produce more movies starring women?
- Has the culture of silence and denial in Hollywood been permanently changed? Will the current mood of “zero tolerance” last?
- How can we capitalize on this moment to allow room for more diverse representation, like seeing more female minorities and people of colour cast in in leading roles and directing positions?
- Have you had moments of soul-searching where you’d had to meaningfully shift how you conduct yourself? How have the rules changed for you?
- Has there been a shift in your willingness to speak up about abuse you witness or suspect in this business?
- Are you involved, or have you supported, the Time’s Up campaign to raise funds for the Legal Defense Fund?
- Will you be checking Rotten Apples before you accept a part?
- Have you ever had to betray your feminist values in order to get a part or a job?
- Who are three female directors you would love to work with in the future?
- What is one thing you will be doing to help support up-and-coming actresses and women working behind the scenes in Hollywood?
