Happy hue year

Despite that expected blah feeling après the holiday season–back to reality, to work and to calorie counting (sigh)–there is nothing more energizing and uplifting than a cold, sunny January day with a clear, blue sky. Vincent Van Gogh was right when he said, “I never get tired of the blue sky.”  And judging from the countless shades of blue that washed up on the Spring 2008 ready-to-wear runways, designers agree too.

But don’t get FASHION wrong. Overall, these fashion collections were a veritable pooh-pooh platter of pantones, but blue (specifically, blue iris) has been chosen as the, ahem, blue ribbon (colour) winner of 2008.

And while this now-trendy tint used to conjure up visions of the sweet but not-so-chic Cookie Monster, there is nothing more sensuous (or current) than Christian Lacroix’s turquoise strapless stunner. It definitely calls for a Code Blue.

And speaking of heart stopping, cobalt blue and black (à la YSL) is perhaps the hottest pairing since Angie and Brad. Watch for runway-inspired stores like H&M, French Connection and Zara to get into the blue–be it robin’s egg, royal, cerulean or sapphire. And, while FASHION won’t go as far to say that blue is the new black, we will stand firmly on our aquamarine Sergio Rossi platforms and declare that blue is the new hue.
