No 16-year-old on earth can compete with Elle Fanning’s Hollywood cachet. She’s been on set with Cate Blanchett, shopped Rodeo Drive with Sofia Coppola and partied with Miuccia Prada in Milan (being the current spokesperson for Miu Miu and all). If that doesn’t signal a gal who is going places, her latest role in this summer’s Maleficent—which has her sharing the silver screen with Angelina Jolie—will. (P.S. she already shared screen time with Brad Pitt in 2006’s Babel and 2008’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button).

On the cusp of Fanning’s next phase of fame, FASHION magazine photographed the young starlet for our Summer 2014 Issue in the apropos confines of an estate home in the Hollywood Hills. After she was snapped in outfits by a mix of labels ranging from Blumarine, Delpozo and Paule Ka, Fanning sat down with features editor Elio Iannacci to talk about fashion, film and family time with the Jolie-Pitt clan. Here is a sneak peak of Fanning’s cover story, due to hit newsstand shelves on May 19, 2014.

On the film that made her want to be an actress
The 7 Year Itch made me so obsessed with Marilyn Monroe and acting. I watched it when I was 7—way too young to see it—but I was Marilyn for Halloween that year. There is so much depth to her because of what she went through in her life. You can see that in her performances. It never looks like she’s faking anything.

On her Maleficent co-star, Angelina Jolie
She is the most elegant lady in the entire world. When she walks into the room, everyone looks and notices… she has such presence and she’s really that powerful. No one else could play Maleficent. I was nervous to meet her at first… she’s like the queen. When I met her during rehearsals and she immediately grabbed me and hugged me and then I was fine.

On the leading man of her dreams
That would be Ryan Gosling! He once gave me a hug. It was pretty intense because he’s dreamy. I have a Ryan Gosling colouring book so whenever I want, I can colour Ryan.

On her earliest memory on set
I still remember being in Door On The Floor with Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger. I was 4. Jeff taught me how to draw legs on people. I could only draw sticks but he showed me how to make wider legs so the picture looked more real.

On the way teens are treated in Hollywood
That condescending thing gets me. The “you’re young now but you’ll know in a couple of years what life is about” kind of thing. I don’t think in a couple of years I’m going to have this huge revelation. I’m still going to be the same person. When you are an adult not everything changes. Teens are who they are. Trying to change us to be older before we should doesn’t make sense. I always want to have a free spirit—I don’t want to be strict with life.

On her hardest day of work so far
It was filming one of the last scenes in [the 2012 drama] Ginger and Rosa. It was very emotional twelve-page scene. We did it for 2 days straight. I was crying the entire time. It was dramatic but it was a cleansing.
