FASHION Magazine April 2015 Cover: Elisha Cuthbert

Elisha Cuthbert doesn’t care about being perceived as too much of a patriot. The 32-year-old actress, who hails from Calgary, has always had a ferociously loyal “Team Canada” attitude throughout her decade-plus dalliance with fame. It seems she is always encouraging fellow creative Canucks in their own careers: whether she’s tweeting her love of Tegan and Sara, cheering for her husband—Toronto Maple Leafs captain, Dion Phaneuf—or hanging out with and supporting Canadian fashion designers such as Matthew Gallagher (whom she attended the CAFA Awards with), Cuthbert seriously adores her home and native land. Which is why the star of the much-buzzed-about, Ellen Degeneres-produced One Big Happy sitcom makes the perfect cover girl for FASHION magazine’s April Issue. Exclusively photographed by Chris Nicholls and styled by George Antonopoulos, the photo shoot had all-Canadian crew—something that Cuthbert was revved for—and a host of clothes from the finest designers in the country. Below is a taste of her cover story, which will be on newsstands March 23rd.

Cuthbert on the difference between the hockey and Hollywood crowd: People in the hockey world are so humble. They’re such a kind group of people. They’re so real. I’ve only met amazing people through Dion’s job. My world can be a little jaded. You go to California and to these parties that are supposed to be parties…even Golden Globes parties. But they’re not really parties in the real sense of the word. They’re business-y. They’re work…business meetings with drinks! When a hockey team throws a party, you’re having a good time and not talk shop.

On Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi as role models: They are a couple that all married people can look up to. They’re very supportive of one another and they have each other’s backs. When Ellen was busy doing her talk show and couldn’t be with us [on set One Big Happy], Portia stepped in. One could easily not care about the other’s endeavours, but Portia really did.

On the most awkward film of her career:
The Girl Next Door [released in 2004] took me so far out of my comfort zone. The provocativeness that I had to exude in that film was daring… especially at my age at that time. I was twenty and I barely knew who I was. It was weird. I looked very attractive and the clothes were bringing out this sexy side of me. It was challenging to have to get to a place where I was okay with what I was wearing—especially when I was literally in fishnets and a bra and underwear. It was really tough.

On her evolving—and dysfunctional—relationship with fashion: I can’t believe how fearless I was. Under the age of 25, I didn’t care what I wore. Now I sit in front of the mirror and think, “What lipstick should I wear?" I just have much more knowledge. It can make you insecure.
