Your New Must-Listen-To Fashion Soundtrack From Chanel

For the past 20+ years sound designer Michel Gaubert has created stylized soundtracks for Oscar de la Renta, Balenciaga, Dries van Noten and Jil Sander. But many of his signature mixes were created for Chanel. Gaubert told FASHION that he started working with Karl Lagerfeld in 1990 when the designer asked him to create a runway soundtrack for his namesake line.  “I was petrified,” Gaubert said. Up until then, he was best known to the fashion crowd as a top DJ at Le Palace, a Parisian club. He met Lagerfeld at Le Palace, then the two reconnected years later when Gaubert was working at one of Lagerfeld’s favourite record stores. “I do love Karl,” said Gaubert. “He doesn’t say, ‘The collection is like this, so how about this song?’ We’ll sit and talk about music and fashion for an hour, and ideas will emerge. He’s so open to trying crazy things—as long as they’re the right crazy things.” Today you can download some of those “right crazy” tunes on Apple Music. The Chanel Show Soundtracks designed by Gaubert are a worldwide exclusive on Apple Music. In addition to a 30-song playlist from Gaubert, there are tracks and playlists from friends of the House including Pharrell Williams, Chanel ambassador and spokesperson Caroline de Maigret, musician Sébastien Tellier and the band Ibeyi, among others.
