Day three – Front row and fancy-free
Despite a few fashion casualties (felled by fierce-looking boots on sore feet), too much caffeine and too little sleep, the fashion pack turned up today looking perfectly turned out. Inside the Liberty Grand, spirits were still high and the ankle booties even higher. On with the shows…
6 p.m. Pat McDonagh Couture
View the slideshowThe Iceberg collection marks McDonagh’s 40th year in the industry. Known for her traditional wools, flannels and plaids, she turned her emphasis to global warming for Fall 2007. Models stalked down the runway in metallic fabrics, furs from non-endangered species and textured wools. The white floor-grazing skirt with the penguin print (very March of the Penguins) may have raised FASHION’s eyebrows, but the palette—ice blue, ivory and silver—upped the cool factor. Inside scoop: A portion of the proceeds from McDonagh’s global warming–themed T-shirt goes to the World Wildlife Fund. Who says fashion doesn’t feel good?
7 p.m. Izzy Camilleri [ View the slideshow Slick and sexy sums up Camilleri’s fall collection. Fitted leather in naughty noir, mixed with hits of shiny patent, dominated the strong lineup of looks. Two messages stood out: sexy ’80s (lots of draping, hard-edged lines and glittery oversized accessories) and cyber sex kitten (metallic fabrics, bustiers and extended black liquid eyeliner). Definitely a sexed-up scene of ’80s punk meets space siren. FASHION purred over the mink capelet paired with cropped black leather pants, perfect for any fashionable feline. The pin-straight hair with a heavy curtain of rock ’n roll fringe had FASHION rushing home to plug in the flatiron. Elbow-length gloves and ankle booties in inky patent leather provided a little liquid love to the highly covetable collection.
8 p.m. Joeffer Caoc [ View the slideshow Caoc’s fall lineup gave FASHION technicolour dreams. Cobalt blue and acid green (à la Jil Sander) gave juicy jolts of colour to the collection. The high-waisted black leather skirt was a serious nod to the ’80s, as was the black off-the-shoulder jersey dress. Known for his clean, well-tailored lines and modern minimalist look, Caoc hit the mark this season with the liquid metal dress. FASHION is still experiencing closet envy. Must-have piece for fall: a dress with an asymmetrical neckline or a one-shouldered style. FASHION’s fave was Caoc’s magenta silk one-shoulder tucked dress—definitely a new classic.
9:30 p.m. Pink Tartan [ View the slideshow The show was fashionably late, as per usual, but the Pink Tartan fan club didn’t seem to mind—more time to mingle with martinis. Although FASHION thought the collection to be a tad predictable, we still oohed and ahhed over the pretty picks from designer Kimberly Newport-Mimran. Favourites included the gunmetal grey tunic dress, and the grey wool capelet paired with super-skinny pants (very Little Red Riding Hood meets runway). On the FASHION watch for fall: grey tights and leggings. The belted bubble coat with the fur-trimmed collar said “luxe be a lady,” while the grey metallic belted puffer coat would be perfect for either the street or the slopes. FASHION’s final verdict? PT was pretty, polished and perfectly on-trend.
