Day four: All work and no play…
Despite a few stiletto-wounded whimpers overheard in the show lineups last night, the energy was still electric aprés a full four days of the FDCC’s Canadian-cool Fashion Week. While the shows (thus far) have ranged from dazzling to disappointing, one thing is certain: All work and no play makes fashion a dull industry. Hence, the word on everyone’s collagen-plumped lips ce soir was: after-parties!
But before we can mix ‘n’ mingle in our Manolos, I hear the call of the styled…
7 p.m. Izzy Camilleri
Camilleri’s latest collection was a juxtaposition of naughty and nice. Lots of metallic eyelet, lace, taffeta and brocade pieces started the show, but FASHION wasn’t whipped into a frenzy until the silver brocade trapeze coat upped the fabulous factor on the runway. A warm front of golden hues blew into a cold one when the black and silver grouping caught our attention. The show closed with a little devilish drama (Camilleri’s trademark): high-waisted leather pants and corset belts added a serious edge. FASHION‘s fave frock? The award goes to the black leather and gold lace cocktail dress. Paired with tousled come-hither hair and bedroom eyes, it made the show an affair to remember.
8 p.m. Joeffer Caoc
With a slew of shimmery layers and flowing diaphanous pieces, Caoc’s spring collection sparkled and outshined many of his Canadian competitors. The 3/4-length champagne evening coat got a FASHION gold star and incited many nods from the front row. Although the floral grouping fell a little flat, the easy, breezy tops and skirts, in washes of cream, pink and lavender, were perfectly polished. Sleek side-parted hair, tied into tiny knots, and fresh-faced, natural makeup kept the collection feeling ultramodern yet timeless. FASHION left the show with a long spring shopping list.
9 p.m. Charles & Ron
This collection took its style cues from the ’30s and ’40s’the eras of elegance and glamour. While the red print pieces made FASHION frown, the white strapless cocktail dress with a chiffon overlay had us clamouring for a cocktail with Cary Grant. Models channelled a modern-day Joan Crawford with their vivid red lips, powdered skin and strong, defined brows. The heavy emphasis on ruffles, rosettes and ribbons didn’t convince FASHION to become a frill seeker, but the black lace leggings made us pine to have them on our pins.
