Oscars 2015: About last night’s statement necklace trend

“The neck is back!” might seem like a funny thing to declare, but in a time of extreme butt-worship, it seems totally fair. Stars took last night’s red carpet by storm, cementing many of the season’s already-in-motion trends. But a new one, the statement necklace, also carved its place in style history, with high profile clavicles covered up in everything from diamonds to pearls.

In a look that was both high impact and polarizing, Scarlett Johansson paired her emerald green Atelier Versace gown with a custom collar made of Swarovski crystals. Meanwhile, Cate Blanchett paired her relatively simple black Maison Martin Margiela column dress with strands of Tiffany & Co. turquoise.

In an interview with Ryan Seacrest, Aussie actress Margot Robbie marveled at the cost of her own piece, a $1.5 million dollar Van Cleef & Arpels original Zip Antique Colombine necklace originally made for the Duchess of Windsor back in 1938.

Statement necklaces were also used as clever styling props, as evidenced on Anna Kendrick, who weaved her Norman Silverman diamond collar into the neck of her peachy Thakoon gown.
