Nobody Wants This, the hit new Netflix series from creator Erin Foster has left audiences lusting after hot Rabbi Noah Roklov (Adam Brody) and his love interest Joanne’s (Kristen Bell) truly perfect wardrobe in equal measure. It’s quintessential Los Angeles girly — and we’re officially obsessed.
Throughout the first season of the series, which follows Joanne and Noah as they navigate their budding relationship. The series has given us squeal-worthy kisses, laugh-out-loud comedy and tear-inducing break-ups — and through it all, Joanne has been serving looks that are both chic and accessible.
Her initial meet-cute and automatic banter with Noah? Joanne was in the perfect date night outfit, wearing an off-the-shoulder mesh top from Abercrombie & Fitch with black denim and a belt from It girl-beloved brand Khaite. Their first (albeit kind of disastrous) date? Joanne was a vision in red, reportedly rocking a Reformation midi-skirt and textured cardigan. When she showed up court-side at Noah’s intramural basketball game and won over his “Matza Ballers” teammates? She wowed in a brown cut-out top from Christopher Esber and a cream By Far Bar Tote. And for *that* finale moment after Noah’s niece’s bat mitzvah? Joanne turned heads in an aqua blue strapless dress from Alex Callan.
The key to Joanne’s pitch-perfect looks is the fact that she — like every L.A. local — keeps it simple, with a penchant for clean silhouettes and styles that have added interest via colour or texture. And, by mixing higher and lower end brands, like pairing a Khaite belt with an Abercrombie & Fitch bodysuit, her style is not only enviable, but also easy to emulate in your own wardrobe. The podcaster cycles between brands like Staud, Reformation, and By Far, always topped with a personalized stack of gold jewellery, like any good millennial.
The fact that Joanne’s wardrobe feels casual yet elevated in a way that screams L.A. was intentional. As costumer designer Negar Ali Kline told Forbes, “We made sure to include local L.A. designers. It helped us to be specific to the place.” These included the likes of Jesse Kamm for trousers. And series creator Erin Foster is herself an L.A. gal through and through, having been raised in the city and dabbling in acting in the early aughts. Alongside her sister, Foster also recently launched Favorite Daughter, a brand with pieces that could have been plucked from Joanne’s closet.
And Bell’s own style is following suit. While she may have been born in Michigan, as a member of the Hollywood elite for over 20 years, Bell is herself a certified Los Angeleno. And never has that been more clear than while doing press for the new Netflix series. A quick scan of Bell’s outfits proves that costume designer Kline most likely turned to the actresses own closet — and some of her most-worn brands — to pull inspiration for the character. Because like her character Joanne, Bell is a fan of mixing high-low and favours clean lines and simple silhouettes that leave an impact, either through colour or accessories.
Take, for instance, her look for a Nobody Wants This press day with co-star Brody. For the event, Bell and Chavez chose a Bordeaux-coloured midi-dress (the colour of the season) with a mock neck, asymmetrical shoulders and ruching from Staud.
In true Californian simplicity, Bell let the dress do the talking, opting for a sleek bun and minimal jewelry.
Just days later, Bell was spotted out in New York City doing press for the show in a sheer shirt and skirt from Philosophy. Going glam in the Big Apple, Bell put a Parisian twist on the look, pairing it with black heels from By Far, a moon bag from Anine Bing and cat eye sunnies from Oliver Peoples.
What really made the ‘fit stand out was the colour, with Bell paying homage to the swells of the California coastline by opting for a dreamy shade of blue.
On September 30, Bell popped up in a Joanne-beloved print, stepping out in a black and white striped body-con dress from Posse. On her feet were, of course, By Far’s Yasha Pumps, a mainstay in Bell’s press tour wardrobe.
While Bell may be a tad more glam on the red carpet than Joanne is while recording her latest podcast ep or chasing hunky Rabbi Roklov and his biceps around Los Angeles, the effect is similar: Bell — and Joanne — look effortless; like they’ve just thrown something on from the back of their (very expansive) closets and it all just came together seamlessly.
So actually yes, everybody wants this.
