If you weren’t up on the CFDA awards before, chances are it’s now on your radar thanks to Rihanna attending the affair nearly naked. The event – think a more casual Met Gala - is designed to honour individuals who have made outstanding contributions to fashion. The glamorous evening involved some major wins - on stage and the red carpet.
New York’s own Joseph Altuzarra took home the coveted CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award. After only six years, his young label beat out both Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang for the top prize. Altuzarra’s success was prophesized in 2012 when he won the CFDA’s Emerging Designer of the Year award.
Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen picked up the Accessory Designer of the Year award for their luxury brand, The Row. And, Public School’s Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne were jointly named Menswear Designer of the Year. Tom Ford received a standing ovation following his lifetime achievement award acceptance speech. The award was presented to Ford by his husband and partner of 27 years, Richard Buckley. While Raf Simons brought tears to Marion Cotillard’s eyes (who presented the award wearing a creation by the designer) as he accepted the International Award, Riri was arguably the biggest winner of the night being presented with the Fashion Icon of the Year by fashion dominatrix Anna Wintour.
Red carpet pro, Blake Lively, chose a more casual look than what we have seen from her of late. The blonde bombshell arrived with a dashing Michael Kors in a green mini dress with pink and white embellishments. New mom Olivia Wilde looked fit and gorgeous in a black vintage fringe Moillie Parins dress. On the heels of public drama Solange Knowles oozed poise in metallic silk Calvin Klein with designer Francisco Costa by her side. However, Rihanna’s 216,000 Swarovski crystals, pink fur, and bum arguably overshadowed the entire red carpet.
