The amfAR gala, largely considered a social highpoint of the Cannes Film Festival, consisted of a Red themed, Marilyn Monroe inspired fashion show extravaganza! The term “extravaganza” may seem a bit over the top, but so is this event.
The show, now in it’s eleventh year, featured one-of-a-kind pieces from 35 of the top fashion houses (Alexander McQueen, Chanel, Tom Ford, Givenchy just to name a few) with nearly 40 models working the runway in the one-off couture gowns. The dresses are subsequently auctioned off to raise money for AIDS research. Last year the gowns raised a whopping $2 million dollars.
The event, also notorious for it’s legendary auction (which in past years included a smooch from George Clooney, and a trip to space with Leonardo DiCaprio), was attended by a list of glamorous A-listers. After showing up on the red carpet in multiple Dior gowns, Marion Cotillard strayed away from the fashion house’s design and instead opted for a romantic white dress by Alexander McQueen. Jessica Chastain also did a 180 degrees turn in the wardrobe department (she’s been working the premieres in bold-coloured ensembles) stunning us in an elegant black Givenchy Couture gown. And the amfAR gala is never complete without a slew of top models in attendance. While Karlie Kloss and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley led the well-dressed pack, it was Heidi Klum and Chanel Iman who turned up the heat in skin-baring outfits at the biggest party of the Cannes Film Festival.
