Television’s biggest night of the year returned once again on September 14 with the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards. Between all the stellar A-list appearances, much-anticipated award wins and emotional speeches, there was no shortage of glitz, glamour and memorable moments to go around.
Hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze, fan-favourite shows like Severance, The Studio and The White Lotus led nominations. Meanwhile, coming-of-age drama Adolescence and medical thriller The Pitt both won big. It was a big night for “firsts” as well, with Adolescence‘s 15-year-old leading man, Owen Cooper, making history as the youngest male winner ever in any acting category. Severance‘s Tramell Tillman also became the first Black man to win an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
Yet, where the night truly shone was through its fashion—according to us, at least. And although the festivities took place in Los Angeles, it’s clear that the stylish spirit of New York Fashion Week travelled across the country, inspiring today’s hottest TV stars to dazzle the red carpet in their very best looks.
A-list actresses like Selena Gomez and Sydney Sweeney led the charge in bright red ensembles that evoked one of the night’s fiery trends, while Jenna Ortega stole the show in a glamorous bejewelled look designed by Sarah Burton for her first Givenchy collection. The men also made waves this year with standout actors like Colman Domingo, Dewayne Perkins and Adam Brody challenging the all-black suit norm in uniquely colourful and embellished ensembles.
Below, we’ve rounded up the most exciting trends of the night—from cool-blue ensembles and shimmery metallics to exaggerated silhouettes and everything in between.
It’s hard to name just one red carpet standout amid all the glitz and glamour of the evening—but these spotlight-stealing scarlet gowns sure made a convincing case. The head-turning hue was the common thread amongst these actresses (not only did they match the carpet, they easily outshined it.) Selena Gomez channelled old-Hollywood glamour in a sweeping Louis Vuitton gown with an exaggerated scarf that trailed behind her, while Sydney Sweeney wowed in a custom satin Oscar de la Renta dress complete with a draped sash. Cristin Milioti donned a sculptural number by Danielle Frankel as she accepted her Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, while Hunter Schafer joined in on all the red-hot fun with a dark magenta McQueen look.

If there were an award for the most shocking look of the night, Jenna Ortega would have won it. The Wednesday star set the tone for a high-shine evening with a shimmering, jewel-encrusted top from Sarah Burton’s first Givenchy collection. Corey Hendrix also understood the assignment, clad in a tailored blazer with a woven floral pattern and light-catching beads. Plus, Michelle Monaghan and Angela Bassett competed for who wore metallics best, both in eye-catching silver gowns by Rabanne and Yara Shoemaker, respectively.

If tradition’s true, it’s simply good luck to don something blue for special occasions. These stars proved that the age-old saying may be on to something with their standout looks. Carrie Coon hit the carpet in a strapless, powder blue Chanel gown while debuting a striking platinum pixie cut. Colman Domingo proved that men’s suiting can be anything but boring with his pale blue and checkered Valentino blazer, complete with fringed crystal embellishments and a matching polka-dot collared shirt and scarf. Adam Brody took a page from his fellow actor’s style book and played around with a sky blue Prada tuxedo (which complemented Leighton Meester’s blush and blue Prada gown). Plus, Severance star Sarah Bock also made waves in a shimmering aquamarine dress, complete with a dramatic cape that her “outie” would surely be proud of.

As Hollywood’s best and brightest, these Emmy-goers are no strangers to on-screen transformations—so it’s only fitting that they brought their shape-shifting talents to an array of uniquely sculptural red carpet looks. Dewayne Perkins commanded attention in a custom Harbison Studios look featuring a full-length black dress coat adorned with brooch-like crystal buttons layered over a wide-legged, cummerbund-defined all-white ensemble. Cate Blanchett and Chloë Sevigny both played with exaggerated shoulders in all-black ensembles, with Blanchett wearing a sharp Louis Vuitton jumpsuit and Sevigny going for a daring Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello gown. Chase Sui Wonders made a statement in a black off-the-shoulder Thom Browne dress with jutting hips and a dramatic lace-up back. Meanwhile, Blackpink’s Lisa brought whimsy to the carpet with a fairytale-inspired blush pink ballgown by Lever Couture that swirled around her bodice and high-low skirt into a perfectly-stylized train. Last but certainly not least, Canadian drag icon Priyanka made her striking Emmys debut in a three-piece ensemble by Canadian label OFFTN Studios—featuring a floral-embroidered white bra top, a high-waisted floor-length black skirt and a sweeping black dupatta that trailed behind her with effortless grace.
