Carla’s got a brand new bag

By Stephanie Trendocher

Always impeccable in Dior, France’s first lady (and former supermodel, for those who’ve been under a rock), Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, knows how to make a fashion statement. But her latest fashion accessory comes not from the hands of couture designers, rather a sewing cooperative in Khayelitsha, South Africa, where Bruni-Sarkozy was given the multicoloured hessian and cotton bag.

Available exclusively at Paris style emporium Colette (colette.fr), 420 limited-edition reproductions, dubbed the Carla, of course, are available for about $125, with proceeds going towards establishing a new co-operative in Khayelitsha. So while, in the realm of polical shopping, Sarah Palin’s $150,000 shopping spree may not have shown much social responsibility, the Carla bag gives you a worthwhile reason to shop.
