Yoga fashion is a bit of an oxymoron. It seems so ridiculous to be concerned about outer appearance while working on inner change and enlightenment, doesn’t it?  Classes are meant to be serene pools of space and time where students can relax into the present, but this is easier said than done when your pants are riding where the sun don’t shine during a salutation.

After downward doggin’ it in India for the past month, I happen to think it’s much easier to focus on mindfulness when all your bits and pieces are securely in place. How else can you achieve internal bliss when you’re tying yourself up in knots?

One thing is for certain, if I hadn’t packed my cozy Aruba Pants ($90) by Cocymela (, nurturing my inner yogi for twelve hours a day wouldn’t have been nearly as Zen. Cocymela is a Penticton, B.C.–based company created by a husband and wife team Dave and Fiona Halliwell, along with their four children, whose names are combined give it it’s funky moniker–CO for Conor, CY for Lucy, ME for Meg and the LA for Nicola. I stumbled up the line of performance gear, which includes the CocyTouch, CocyLite and CocyFrench Terry ranges, at Om (#4 2009-33rd Ave. S.W., 403-283-9642) in Calgary’s ever so trendy Marda Loop. Cocymela is also a proud member of  “1% for the planet” (, a growing alliance of companies contributing one per cent of all sales to helping the earth stay in business.
