I usually zip around the city on the subway, so it’s not often that I actually take an interest in cars (beyond Uber, obviously). But promise me a trunk filled with buttery leather bags designed by Jason Wu and I’m suddenly all ears.

Last night in Toronto, Cadillac showed off their slick Escala concept car (which has a busier social life than I do—it was being whisked away hours later by a team of handlers to Geneva) and held a panel discussion on the future of design. Turns out their creative designers work much in the same way as fashion designers do.

Planning three to four years in advance, the design team travels the world in search of trends on everything, from sunglasses to sofas to predict popular car colours for the coming seasons. Michelle Killen, the lead creative designer, likened it to “going to the Oscars four years from now and you can’t wear black. What do you wear?"

If you’re buying an expensive car, chances are you’re going to spend quite a bit of time driving it. To make the experience more comfortable, the design team considers every detail; there’s likely interior hardware that mimics a handbag you just bought or cozy wool seats in the rear reminiscent of your couch at home.

And that’s where Wu comes in. Using the luxurious leathers found in the car, he worked with the Cadillac team to design a set of custom bags for the girl on-the-go. They’re a major step up from my usual road trip totes. Consider me sold.
