With the dawn of a new decade comes an era of cool and fresh bridal style as seen last week at New York Bridal Fashion Week. For Spring 2020, there were sweeping gowns, mini-dresses, pant suits, jumpsuits, shorts…pretty much every style and silhouette of wedding wear was on the runways. Designers like Reem Acra took things over the top with an excessive collection presented against the ornate and historic backdrop of Saint Bartholomew’s Church set to an all-vintage Madonna soundtrack, while Canadian design darling Ines Di Santo presented an elegant and dramatic collection over afternoon tea at the luxe Baccarat Hotel.

Just back from the shows, here are five of the most unconventional looks we spotted for 2020 brides, perfect if you want a vibe that’s totally individual and completely extra.

J. Lo Vibes

Berta is knows for its incredibly sexy dresses but for spring 2020 it was clear the label took inspiration from Jenny’s greatest and most iconic looks. Plunging v-necklines were a hallmark of the entire collection and each dress accessorized with gigantic jeweled hoop earrings.

More is More

Reem Acra always delivers the drama with her bridal lineup and her latest “The Thankyou Collection” may have been her very best yet. So many of the looks were literally dripping in details—lace, pearls, tulle, crystal embroidery, epic veils, headpieces—and what took styles over the top was wearing ALL these details combined into one ultra-maximalist look.

Short Suits

Bridal designers moved the need forward from the bridal pantsuit trend of the past few seasons and showed sexy short suits in untraditional colours and textures. Ines Di Santo showcased one of the coolest with the suit jacket worn open to showcase décolleté in a look that’s very Miley feeling, while shorts were paired with sheer mesh leggings adorned with delicate floral embellishments.

Easy, breezy and sexy silhouettes straight out of Studio 54 were seen on several runways but nowhere more than at Theia. Slinky sequin sheaths, silver lamé shirtdresses and fluid jumpsuits like this one brings ultimate party era back to life for 2020.

Pump The Volume

A hallmark of the ‘80s, balloon sleeves and hemlines are back and make an interesting and dramatic detail for 2020 brides. Designers showed short bubble skirts, billowy balloon jackets over sheath gowns and dramatic puffed sleeves like these seen at Lela Rose. The bubble trend is a great way to achieve dramatic dress volume without bulk.
