Known for his beautiful abstract printed pieces, London-based, Montreal-born designer Erdem Moralioglu has achieved international fashion stardom in just five years. (He counts Tinseltown A-listers like Ashley Olsen and Keira Knightley among his many fans.) Here, Moralioglu talks fall essentials and texture messages.

How would you describe the Erdem woman? “Strong, confident and beautiful.”

What are the must-have pieces for fall 2011? “Our fitted Devan dress, which is supersexy. Wear it with our oversized boyfriend cable-knit jumper over your shoulders, in case you get chilly.”

What was your inspiration this season? “I was inspired by the movie Pollock. I love the idea of someone tearing a canvas up and wearing it.”

Did you experiment with new techniques this season? “This season, the Erdem girl became a woman. It was all about a new, meaner silhouette and really playing with textile manipulation. I took risks by blending and manipulating paint effects on a range of new fabrics, such as power mesh, sequins, tweed and velvet.”

What’s next? “We’re really excited about our new sunglasses collection with Cutler and Gross.”

What is the most important thing we should know about you? “I have a serious book addiction. I [buy] about five new books a week. I need more shelves.”
