Cameron Williamson: Iman once said that when she was on the runway she thought of Africa. What’s top of mind when you’re on the catwalk?
Karlie Kloss: I focus on the woman I’m embodying. At an Oscar de la Renta show, I think about elegance; at Alexander Wang, it’s all about attitude and independence.

CW: What’s the secret to having a long career in the modelling industry?
KK: Being able to find a balance between your career, outside interests and personal life. My family’s support keeps me going and taking time off to spend with them is what has allowed me to stay driven.

CW: Recently you enrolled in NYU—what are you going to study?
KK: I don’t have to declare a major just yet. I’m still in the process of looking through courses but I’m so excited to get started!

CW: You’ve said that knowing how to code is necessary to succeed in a digital world, especially for women—what inspired you to take up coding in the first place?
KK: It’s always fascinated me, but it’s not a subject I was taught in school. So last year, I decided to take a coding crash course and I ended up LOVING it. There’s a big misconception that coding is strictly mathematical; it’s actually incredibly creative. Code runs everything around us, and young women are so important to defining the future.

CW: Decades from now, when you look back at your career, what do you want to be remembered for?
KK: I hope my career spans decades and can be looked back on! If I can show one girl that you can do whatever you set your mind to, I will be thrilled.
