I’ve always wanted to travel back in time, and last night at the Filthy Gorgeous after party it felt like I’d gone back some forty years. Taking in the music, decor and ambiance at Cube nightclub on Queen Street West was like falling into the decadent disco era of the 1970s. Shiny gold Bourgie lamps, leather banquets covered in animal-print cushions and lingerie models posing on a bed made for a virtual Penthouse party, perfect for celebrating Barry Avrich’s new documentary on the skin mag’s late founder Bob Guccione.

The party invite instructed guests to “Dress Sexy,” and most were more than happy to oblige. Platform heels and bodycon dresses were de rigueur for wannabe starlets hoping to land a role as leading lady, while handsome men wearing expensive suits without ties were in want of nothing more than a quick cameo. Despite posing next to a fuschia-clad Petra Nemcova on the red carpet, Avrich’s wife, Melissa Manly, stood out in a printed Carven dress from the Spring 2013 collection. Bob Guccione Jr., Candace Bailey (of Sopranos fame) and Deepa Mehta all stopped by to take in the glamour and bop to the vintage disco tracks. This was the first TIFF party of the season I’ve been to with a dance floor, and Zoomer’s Suzanne Boyd had the best moves in the room hands down. Whoever said disco’s dead must be rolling over in his grave.
