This weekend: Opera To Go

Like the prospect of a seven-course French dinner, the traditional opera daunts as much as it delights. Luckily, there’s lighter fare in Toronto this weekend. Think of Tapestry’s Opera To Go (March 27 to 29, from $20, 416-973-4000, tapestrynewopera.com)—three short works, followed by a longer (but still only 40-minute) one-act affair—as a tasting of perfect canapés. Witty and modern (read: no old Fidelios here), the selected operas proffer a peek inside the making of opera today. Works are by local luminaries: composers like Glenn James and Abigail Richardson, librettists like Alexis Diamond and Marcia Johnson.

If your appetite’s still not provoked, just think of the pop-cult appeal: even Gossip Girl went to the opera this season, right?
