Our Hong Kong Travel Guide: From the Shores of “the Venice of Hong Kong” to Lantau’s Mountain Peeks

Tai O is a fishing village on stilts on the western coast of Lantau Island. Sometimes called the Venice of Hong Kong, it’s a common travel destination for both foreigners and locals, who come to see the pink dolphins off the coast and buy the salted fish and shrimp paste the fishing village is known for. In the nearby mountains—and only a 15-minute cab ride away—is Big Buddha, or the Tian Tan Buddha statue. To reach the 34-metre-high bronze Buddha, you have to walk up 268 steps. If you start questioning whether you’ll reach the top, remember what Buddha said: “What comes easy won’t last. What lasts won’t come easy.”
