Stylish Canadian weddings: A romantic ceremony at Magrath Mansion in Edmonton

When FASHION’s Alberta Editor Caroline Gault first met her husband, Mike, she was a 14 year old girl obsessed with young Leonardo DiCaprio, and he was a neighborhood teen driving a 1946 Ford while sporting a 6-inch mohawk. “I found him a little scary,” says Gault who clearly changed her opinion when the pair reconnected at the University of Alberta where they were both varsity athletes.

Fast forward a decade, add in a vintage-inspired rose gold and diamond band with round cut diamond engagement ring from Vandenberg’s, and well, you’ve got a wedding to host.

“We had our ceremony in the garden at the Magrath Mansion, which was the personal home of one of the original developers of Edmonton,” says Gault. From there Gault moved the 115 guests to one of her favourite Italian restaurants, Sicilian Pasta Kitchen where they partied into the wee hours of the morning to the tunes of DJ Joses Martin plus the band, Krystle Dos Santos and the Black Mambas.

Last but not least, the pair boarded the VIA Rail train overnight through the mountains from Edmonton to Vancouver before ferrying to Vancouver Island to stay at Middle Beach Lodge in Tofino. Says Gault: “We didn’t need to leave Canada to have a fun and relaxing getaway by the sea. It was perfect.”

“My dress was made by Jessica Halabi an Edmonton designer, and actually the first designer I ever interviewed! She took the onslaught of ideas I had and made them a more streamlined reality, from the lace, to the open back, and the feathers on the skirt. My Mary-Jane flats were also custom from Poppy Barley the leather specially sourced for me and handcrafted in León, Mexico (I wanted to be super comfortable all day). Piecing it all together was such a warm experience,” says FASHION’‘s Alberta Editor, Caroline Gault.
