Word: e-pistolary

Meaning: Of or associated with the art of writing... emails.

Usage: “Location in or near Minneapolis a plus, although an e-pistolary relationship certainly isn’t out of the question.” -- the reliably absurd n+1 personals section

You should know it because: It’s (still!) the season of mistletoe and missives, of mailrooms overflowing with intentions made good. Yesterday I got yet another express’d thing in the mail, this time from my friend Evanne in New York. She’d spend almost 10 times as much to mail it as she did on the corner-store contents (Peanut Chews!), and I loved that. It’s not the thought that counts. It’s the effort. Which isn’t to say we can’t put effort into your emails, too; just that, in today’s iWorld, you don’t. You’re typing emails while reheating Thai food, applying a smoky eye and composing your next tweet--all at once. Remember You’ve Got Mail? It was on TV at some point over this total drag of a holiday and while I didn’t actually watch it, it made me insta-nostalgic for the days when we had to rush home to check our email. New Year’s resolution: set my iPhone to check email less while I’m out, so that when I got home, I can think of writing emails as actually writing again.
