There’s basically two ways to keep up with celebrity gossip: Through the tabloids or through Lainey Gossip. Both are gratifying, but Lainey’s generally the only one telling the truth—her smart brand of gossip is all about the reasons behind why we hear the stories we do about celebrities. Needless to say, Lainey Gossip devotees are a dedicated bunch, which led to the creation of the SMUT Soirée: an annual event where Lainey goes even deeper with her Hollywood intel to reveal blind items, answer gossip questions and more. What started as a Toronto-only event is now a cross-Canada tour, with last night’s Toronto stop being the city’s eighth SMUT Soirée.

Held at the very lush Evergreen Brickworks, the majority of the thousand-plus guests arrived early—while the juice gossip started at 8pm, there were shoe giveaways from Aldo, H&M photo booths and many glasses of wine to take advantage of. The almost entirely female crowd was, without a doubt, the most stylish large crowd we’ve ever seen. (Single gentlemen, get thee to the next SMUT Soirée!) Floral prints with neon-yellow accents seemed most popular—even Lainey herself was wearing a floral dress, as well as a very cute pair of neutral Balenciaga oxford chunky heels (from this season, no less). The other dominate accessory of the night was glasses: SMUT Soirée co-host Dan Levy had just announced the launch of his own eyewear line and Lainey wore a pair all night, citing Jenna Lyons as inspiration.

As for the gossip, we’re mostly sworn to secrecy. The night kicked off with a discussion of “Kanye West’s girlfriend’s baby” (Lainey refuses to print anything about Kim Kardashian on her site, including her name) and continued into a dissection of which couples will and will not make it. Despite the outcome of Miley Cyrus’s engagement seeming rather obvious to us, the status of her relationship was questioned by many eager audience members. And then, much too soon, the stage was taken over by Lainey’s soon-to-be co-hosts for the upcoming CTV daytime talk show, The Social. Melissa Grelo, Traci Melchor and Cynthia Loyst shared their own takes on hot gossip topics, thought it seemed to pull the conversation away from Lainey’s signature brand of insider intel. However this didn’t stop the questions from coming—there were at least two “encore rounds” of gossip tips that kept the party going late into the night.
