Update: Turns out the tea might not have been quite as chaud as people thought. Selena Gomez responded to an Instagram post by E! News that read “Was Selena Gomez gossipping about Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet at [the] Golden Globes? Here’s the truth,” writing: “I told Taylor about two of my friends who hooked up. Not that that’s [anyone’s] business.” There you have – just standard BFF gossip, not celebrity tea. Gomez has since announced she’s taking a break from social media to focus on “what really matters.”

You know those besties you tell everything to? That’s Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift. And honey, the tea was seemingly piping hot at the 2024 Golden Globes where Gomez was spotted sharing more with Swift than a limo to the award show.

Talking about the weather? I don’t think so. The intense interaction, which occurred during a commercial break and was shared on social media by an unknown source, immediately sent the internet into a frenzy, with everyone from diehard Swifties to casual Globes viewers dying to know what they were talking about.
And who can blame them? Between Gomez’s “can you believe it?” nod and smirk to Swift and Keleigh Sperry’s (Miles Teller’s wife and Swift’s plus one) shocked reactions, you just know the gossip was juicy.
Lucky for us (and for all nosy people out there) Twitter’s best lip readers immediately got down to business and concluded that Gomez had asked Timothée Chalamet for a photo but Kylie Jenner, who was Chalamet’s date for the evening, shut it down.

Though this is just speculation, some claim that they can even hear Sperry saying “with Timothée?” in another video of the exchange, which has only fuelled the rumours.
Even if this is true, you might be wondering why it’s such a big deal. Well, while Chalamet and Gomez been friends for the past few years (they worked together in 2019 on Woody Allen’s A Rainy Day In New York and have publicly interacted many times since then), both Gomez and Swift also have a tumultuous history with Jenner.
Many will surely remember the infamous brow feud that went down between Gomez, Jenner and Hailey Bieber in early 2023, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Gomez, Jenner and Swift’s combined history.
Besides Gomez’s messy past with Jenner (which is linked to years of drama between her and Bieber, with whom Jenner is close friends), Swift also went through a very public scandal with the Kardashians in 2016. Although Swift’s Kardashian drama mostly involved Kim and Kanye, it doesn’t appear that Swift has ever been chummy with any members of the Kardashian family ever since.
While the Chalamet-Jenner-Gomez drama seems to be the prevailing theory as to what the gossip sesh was about, the internet had fun thinking of what else could have made Swift and Sperry’s jaws drop — including everything from Gomez telling Swift about her thoughts on the Chiefs to her fast food troubles.

Although we may never actually know what Gomez really said to Swift at the Golden Globes, the viral moment kicked off awards season with some good old fashioned celebrity drama — and really, what more could we ask for?
