Royal wedding countdown: Day 3

A longstanding and decidedly British tradition is donning all kinds of extravagant headwear to nuptials⎯a tradition the royal family has long followed.

Catering to both the fashion crowd as well as royalty is designer and milliner Philip Treacy, a former protégé of Isabella Blow, and frequent collaborator of the late Alexander McQueen⎯besides virtually every female royal, his pieces have sat on the heads of Lady Gaga, SJP, Grace Jones and Daphne Guinness.

So will he have a hand in the royal wedding? Unlike other designers, Treacy has no issue confirming his involvement in the proceedings. “I’m designing hats for queens, princesses and celebrities; you definitely won’t miss them on the big day,” he told style.com. “I design for royalty throughout the world because royals actually wear hats,” going on to explain that the royals actually keep the millinery business alive and well.

But why headwear? Treacy told the Huffington Post, hats and headwear were more or less “a cheaper form of cosmetic surgery”. “When you meet someone, you meet their face. It’s the most potent part of the body to embellish,” he said.

So will Kate wear Treacy, like Camilla did when she walked down the aisle in 2005? We’re hoping for a Sarah Burton for McQueen and Treacy combo for the future queen.
