Will Kate be a fashion icon in the same way Diana was? Some of the biggest names in fashion⎯including Karl Lagerfeld, Anna Wintour, and Valentino⎯give their take. So who loves her, who wants to dress her, and who is bored to tears of her?
Vivienne Westwood to the Telegraph: “I would have loved to have dressed Kate Middleton but I have to wait until she kind of catches up a bit somewhere with style.”
Karl Lagerfeld to WWD: “For the royals, apparently the royal blood is not in demand any longer, not that it’s a bad thing. She is very different from Princess Diana, she is chic in a way the position needs. Let’s wait and see.”
Anna Wintour to the BBC: “Obviously Kate Middleton is going to be put under a microscope in terms of the press coverage, and how important she’ll be is really her call.”
Giorgio Armani to WWD: “She will have all the time in the world to become fully integrated into her new role and choose the most sophisticated and precious dresses and outfits for official occasions. She is so discreet and straightforward, but highly aware of fashion trends”.
Matthew Williamson to the Telegraph: “Kate isn’t a fashion bunny. I don’t know why everyone in fashion is waiting to see what she wears. I’m, like, thinking: get over it.”
Daniella Issa Helayel to British Vogue: “We are very thrilled at Issa with the news and we wish Kate and William all the best. I’m just very happy Kate wears Issa and that she has chosen to wear Issa for her engagement. She is a very pretty and lovely girl.”
Daphne Guinness: “In choosing Sarah Burton, Miss Middleton not only shows that she supports British designers but that she is also shedding her sweetly demure look for a more serious aesthetic.”
Victoria Beckham: “I would be honoured if she were to wear my designs. I admire her tremendously. She’s a beautiful young girl, she has a wonderful figure and I think she wears clothes beautifully.”
Valentino:
“She has to do something with this long hair because that is very important. To be a future queen, she can’t keep her hair this long.”
