Q&A: ETalk’s Tanya Kim talks TIFF essentials, best dressed and holding hands with Brad Pitt

When skimming through TIFF coverage on most mediums, what you can’t see is the dark circles under the reporters’ eyes, caffeine stained teeth and, depending on what you’re reading, hints of a champagne hangover. Red carpet reporters like ETalk‘s Tanya Kim are on camera all the time, so they don’t have the luxury of invisibility. We had a chance to catch up with her over email on how she keeps it fresh during TIFF, who she’s excited to interview and her red carpet wardrobe.

What will you be doing this year for the festival? “I will be hosting Etalk every day, as well as interviewing stars when they visit our Joe Fresh Style etalk Celebrity Interview Lounge at the Intercontinental Hotel, catching up with celebs at their premieres and galas, BBMing fans and curiosity seekers, tweeting, and slipping in some “off duty” fun at various parties if there’s time (and energy!)” left over.

Tell us about your favourite Red Carpet moment at TIFF. “I would have to say one of my favourite red carpet moments at TIFF would be the night Brad Pitt and I “held hands” for what seemed like an eternity! The moment his SUV pulled up, the crowd went absolutely beserk. I, well ETalk, was his first stop and he did not disappoint. Thank you, Mister Pitt, for the memory.”

Who were some of last year’s best dressed? Worst dressed? “I think some of last year’s best dressed includes Natalie Portman, Robin Wright, Amanda Seyfried and George Clooney. As for worst dressed, well let’s just say I prefer to keep things positive….” [See our red carpet galleries from TIFF 2009]

Who do you expect to be the best dressed this year? “Stars I’m expecting to be best dressed this year include Natalie Portman, Rachelle Lefevre and Marion Cotillard. And for the gentlemen: Scott Speedman, Ryan Reynolds and Jon Hamm.”

Tell us a little about your red carpet wardrobe. “Sparkly, colourful, elegant, sexy, funky, glamourous, functional: Brose, Mackage, Andy The Anh, Pink Tartan, John de Jong, Swarovski, Jenny Bird, Brown’s…” [See some of our festival style picks]

Who are you looking forward to meeting this year? “Zach Galifianakis (hilarious!), Will Ferrell (I’ve met him before, he’s too funny to exclude), Marion Cotillard and Guillaume Canet, Colin Firth (I’ve met him before as well, he’s always too handsome and charming to pass up) Megan Fox and Mickey Rourke together on their red carpet, Shia LeBeouf and Carey Mulligan–I’m hoping to catch a glimpse of the two as lovebirds!”

Favourite person to interview on the red carpet? “I really enjoyed chatting with Sissy Spacek. She’s such a sweet soul and exudes positivity!”

Where are some of the best under-the-radar celeb-spotting zones? “Cherry Cola’s Rock n’ Rolla Cabaret and Lounge, Blowfish, Sky Yard at the Drake Hotel, Sweaty Betty’s, Amber, Whole Foods, and Pusateri’s and Starbucks in Yorkville.”

What are your favourite TIFF events/parties? “All of them! Especially the One X One gala that happens during TIFF, as well as our own ETalk TIFF wrap-up. I do have to give special mention to Fashion Television’s 25th Anniversary party (pre-TIFF), which was fabulous and fierce!

TIFF must be insanely stressful/busy for you – how do you keep cool? “TIFF is indeed insanely busy for all of us, but over the years I’ve learned how to keep my cool. I sleep as much as possible, stay hydrated and caffeinated (coconut water, sugar-free Red Bull, Vitaminwater, green tea, good ole H20), and remember to live in the moment, in the now, and especially to breathe.”

From a red carpet reporter’s standpoint, what is a TIFF nightmare? “Nightmares could involve having a shortage of breath mints and/or Listerine Pocketpaks Oral Care Strips and/or, of course, the dreaded wardrobe malfunction.”
