This Sunday, we celebrate the 33rd annual MTV Video Music Awards, and what we can only assume will be a bevy fashion and beauty looks we won’t stop talking about for many moons.

So that being said, we used this upcoming opportunity for genius and/or disaster(or hopefully, a beautiful combination of both) to take a stroll down memory lane and remember the best, brightest, and the uncategorizable. Because once upon a time, Britney Spears, Madonna, and Christina Aguilera channeled “Live A Virgin”-era Madge and not enough of us talked about Christina’s new hair colour. Also, the meat dress. (And yes, some of these took place on stage and not technically on a red carpet. Just go with it.)

Let’s do this.

VMA red carpet

BEST: Lil Kim, 1999 The purple wig, the purple jumpsuit, and the purple pasty are only three reasons Lil Kim has been consistently ahead of the curve in terms of style (and also life). I mean, 16 years later and wigs, jumpsuit, and pasties are all relatively commonplace -- especially when looking at the wardrobe of a certain Miley Cyrus (we’ll get to her in a sec).
