The New Mr. Rogers Movie is Going to Make You Extremely Nostalgic

Remember Mr. Rogers? How could you not. There are many mind-numbing TV series you may have indulged in as a child — Hi Teletubbies! Hi Spongebob!— but Mister Rogers’ Neighbourhood was not one of them. Fred Rogers was a kind and soft spoken saint-like figure who educated, entertained and advocated for children. From 1968 to 2001, Rogers’ was a reliable voice of understanding, compassion and positive reinforcement in households across the world. (If anyone should be credited for making ‘nice’ cool, it’s him.)

Now, we’re finally getting the new Mr. Rogers content we so desperately need. Won’t You Be My Neighbour, a documentary directed by Oscar winner Morgan Neville, of 20 Feet from Stardom fame, uses archival footage to chronicle Rogers’ legacy. It looks at how Rogers’ handled controversial issues like divorce and civil rights, and subtly highlights how his message of kindness is more timely today than ever before. The doc debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January, and received warm reviews from critics — one who compare the documentary to eating “comfort food.”

Craving a heartwarming, feel-good flick? Won’t You Be My Neighbour hits theatres June 8. Grab a box of tissues, because the trailer alone is likely to make you weep.
