Blimey! Meghan Markle Has Already Adopted a Fancy British Accent

Keep calm and carry on, everyone.

It appears that California-born Meghan Markle is trading in her “likes” and “totallys” for ye old “gollys” and “pip pip, cheerios.” Less than one month after marrying into the monarchy, the Suits star was videotaped speaking to crowds with a *slight* British accent. The clip was captured by royal watcher Aya El Zeiny (@elzeiny99) on June 14, as Markle made her first solo outing with Queen Elizabeth II in Cheshire, England. Take a look (and listen close):

In true Internet fashion, Twitter reactions to the princess’ new accent have been…mixed. Some find it endearing that the Duchess is settling into her new home so well.

Others, are calling her a phony.

Of course, it isn’t unusual for expats to adopt a local accent and use common regional slang while living overseas. (Remember that girl from college who came back from a semester abroad sounding like Posh Spice? Yeah, it’s exactly like that.)

Plus! Markle is far from the first celeb to adopt a foreign twang. Remember when Madonna married British director Guy Ritchie and moved to London in the early 2000s? Or, when Lindsay Lohan moved to Dubai and defended Harvey Weinstein in a Middle Eastern accent? Again, it’s exactly like that. I’m no linguist, but I can attest to the fact that the echo-effect is real. Spend a weekend binge watching Made in Chelsea, and you’ll see what all this voice pattern nonsense is about.
