Lolo Zouaï Thinks the Future of Music is Bilingual

“Everyone at my concerts, they leave speaking French.”

Imagine finding a VHS cassette where a Françoise Hardy concert had been dubbed over with a west coast rap music video. What you might get between the TV static is 23-year-old Lolo Zouaï’s debut album High Highs to Low Lows. The Brooklyn-based artist’s music deftly melds her French and Algerian background with the musical influence of San Francisco, where she grew up, resulting in what she’s dubbed “bittersweet bangers.” Zouaï navigates through an Internet age of moody music set to trap beats over lo-fi visuals, while harkening back to the generations of music that came before her. Watch the video below to hear her thoughts on being an artist.
