9 things I learned from using Kylie Jenner’s app for 24 hours
Kylie Jenner launched her app/website (TheKylieJenner.com) last fall, and if you’re into the Kardashian klan at all or simply a huge beauty and fashion junkie, you’ve probably checked it out. And yes, it’s not easy downloading the app, not only because it tends to crash but also because you have to jump through a few hoops to “unlock” content, both on the app and the website. The locked content is only available to paid subscribers. Yep, it costs $3 a month to have access to all of Kylie’s beauty tips and fashion suggestions.
Now I’m not a huge Kardashian fan but I will admit I was fairly curious, so I signed up for the free 7 day trial. I spent the past 24 hours exploring Kylie’s little korner of the web, and here’s what I learned.
1. Kylie can pull off unusual beauty looks surprisingly well.
We’re used to seeing Kylie and her sisters wearing the usual Kardashian beauty look: soft waves, heavily applied foundation and contouring, nude lips and a smoky eye. So it was fun to see Kylie experimenting with some out-there beauty looks on her new app, whether it was sporting a bright blue wig for a night out or an orange eyeliner and blue lipstick combo.
2. She also has a natural beauty.
That said, the app gives quite a few peeks at Kylie without any makeup on and damn, the girl’s skin is naturally glowy and beautiful. So it was kind of a bummer to see her makeup artist slather on a thick foundation that didn’t even look like the right shade for Kylie’s skin (or honestly, anyone’s skin).
3. Kylie’s favorite words are “sick” and “dope.”
Besides those two, her app is also peppered with generous amounts of “cute,” “fave,” and of course, “obsessed.” Kylie has a lot of obsessions.
4. She also praises her own outfits a lot.
From “How dope is this white Thierry Mugler look I wore to my bday party at Beachclub in Montreal?!” to “How sick was my all-white look for Sunday lunch with Kim at Serafina in NYC? So cute!”, Kylie is very pleased with her ability to get dressed. We’ve all had those days. I think this is how style bloggers became a thing.
5. The shopping recommendations are surprisingly affordable.
In “Cop My Style,” Kylie presents us with an outfit that she wore along with suggestions for similar items that we can buy. The good news for us peasants is that her suggestions are extremely budget-friendly, from a $5 Colourpop eye shadow that she uses in a makeup video to clothes and shoes from fast-fashion favorites like Topshop, Nasty Gal and Uniqlo, most of them making it under the $50 mark.
6. Kylie’s app could be a platform for launching talented artists.
Kylie posted a behind-the-scenes video of her photo shoot with photographer Sasha Samsonova, who she says she happened to find on Instagram. Whether you’re a fan of Kylie or not, you have to admit it’s a pretty cool photo shoot, with a distinctly different vibe than we’re used to from the Kardashians.
Here’s hoping that Kylie’s app helps to bring exposure to talented artists who deserve it.
7. Her makeup artist looks exactly like a Kardashian.
Just something I noticed in this video; it’s a little unsettling. I wonder if having the Kardashian beauty look is a prerequisite for being part of Kylie’s squad, or if it’s just that everyone in the Kardashian’s inner circle adopts that look automatically. I tried to investigate this further but the only thing I could deduce from her birthday pictures was that her friends do a lot of duck lips.
Anyway, all I know is if I had to do full contouring and false eyelashes for myself every morning, I wouldn’t have the energy to do it for Kylie, too.
8. To cop Kylie’s style you neeeeed these 5 things.
From what I’ve been able to glean, you’ll need a large collection of wigs, dozens of boots to add “edge” to your outfits year-round, an entire drawer of Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo for Brunettes, and of course, Kylie Klaws (which is her name for her extremely long nails, preferably painted with a nude polish).
These are just the essentials to get you started, of course. It was hard to narrow it down to 5 things because, like I said, Kylie claims to be obsessed with almost everything she mentions.
9. Kylie is a fairly normal teenage girl.
Basically, the most important lesson I came away with from using Kylie’s app is that Kylie is a pretty typical teenage girl (besides the fame and money, of course). She comes off as pretty disaffected in most of her videos–I’ve never heard someone say “I’m so excited” twice in a row with such deadpan delivery.
Her app, which costs $3 a month and is pretty much entirely about herself, also makes her seem self-absorbed. In her welcome video she describes it as “A cool place for you guys to come and learn a bit more about me” with zero irony or self-awareness. Even if you’re a fan of the Kardashians, you have to admit that there isn’t exactly a dearth of information about any of them.
So, Kylie’s app shows a girl with a disaffected, self-absorbed air, an obsession with clothes and makeup, as well as a tendency to overuse words and “dope.” Yup. Sounds like a normal 18-year-old girl to me.
Now if you’ll excuse me I need to go cancel my subscription.
