Everything That Upset the Internet This Week

So it’s been a pretty wild week. Between Drake and Pusha’s beef, Kim and Donald’s meeting and the prayer-answering news that Timmy Tim and R. Patts are starring in a film together, we’re having a hard time keeping up. Here’s everything you need to know:

Kim Kardashian meets with President Trump

THE STORY: On Thursday, reality star Kim Kardashian met with fellow reality star, Donald Trump, at the White House. Kardashian was there to talk to the president about American prison reform, urging him to pardon Alice Marie Johnson, a 63-year-old woman serving a life sentence for a non-violent drug offence.

THE REACTION:

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Sure, the photo-op looks like something out of some strange alternate reality. Sure, she might not be the best person to speak to the problematic American prison system. But hey, Kim Kardashian isn’t the first celebrity to advocate for a cause she’s passionate about. She’s doing everything she can to get a non-violent, Black, great-grandmother who has been behind bars for over twenty years out of prison. Is that really something worth raging over in 144 characters? We complain about her not using her platform for good, and then we complain about her when she does.

Pusha T used a photo of Drake in blackface

THE STORY: The Drake and Pusha T beef saga continues. In case you haven’t been keeping up: on Push’s new Kanye-produced album DAYTONA—yes, the one with the controversial Whitney Houston album art—he takes a few tired hits at Drake, comparing his rise to Trump’s and accusing him of using a ghostwriter. Drake responded 14 hours later WITH AN ENTIRE DISS TRACK, calling the validity of Push’s drug dealing past into question. The song came with an invoice, in which Drake charges Push for “promotional assistance and career reviving.”

And this is when things get really savage. On Tuesday, Pusha put out “The Story of Adidon,” a vicious track that accuses Drake of a secret love child and uses a compromising photo of Drake in blackface as its cover.

THE REACTION:

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: TBH, this whole thing has gone so much further than I expected it to. Am I complaining? Not at all — who doesn’t love an intelligent, well-researched back-and-forth between two of the world’s biggest rappers? As a proud Torontonian I would come to Drake’s defense, but I don’t have to. He’s already defended himself...in a press statement...in the middle of a rap battle. What is going on?!

A jewellery brand is selling mental illness name plates

THE STORY: Ban.do, a lifestyle brand based in LA, recently launched a line of necklaces with scripted nameplates spelling the words “depression,” “bipolar” and “anxiety.”

THE REACTION:

RIGHTEOUSNESS OF THE RAGE: Well, first of all, 100% of the net proceeds of these necklaces will go to Bring Change to Mind, a non-profit organization focused on ending the stigma surrounding mental illness. Jen Gotch, founder of ban.do, wrote a personal message to shoppers, detailing her own mental illness and explaining how she wants these pieces to “serve as a conversation starter for people to be more open about what’s going on in their minds.”

“I have struggled with mental health issues for most of my life and I know how challenging it can be both personally and professionally,” Jen writes. “It’s so important for us to open up a dialogue about how we are feeling and get to a place where we are comfortable asking for and receiving help. One thing we can all do is work to remove the stigmas associated with mental illness.”

I don’t know if a name plate a la Carrie Bradshaw is going to end mental health stigma and discrimination, but these necklaces have served their purpose as a conversation starter. So for that, props to you, Jen Gotch.
