The 25th annual M.A.C Fashion Cares gala set off with a bang on Sunday night, with a sequin-suited Elton John performing alongside Janelle Monae, Scissor Sisters, Chantal Kreviazuk and others in support of the the AIDS Committee of Toronto and Elton John AIDS Foundation. Co-chaired by Michael King and Elton John’s husband David Furnish, the show, aptly billed as a night of glitter and light, also featured speeches (and even a little runway work-out) by Linda Evangelista and Dean and Dan Caten of Dsquared.

The apparent last Fashion Cares featured several looks back into the gala’s audacious past, featuring video of Ru Paul’s many performances, Dita Von Teese’s champagne striptease and even a re-appearance of a gold body-painted cross dressing diva who’d come out of retirement just for the night.  To boot, the man of the evening, Elton John was in pitch-perfect form, as he rocked the crowd to their feet with several renditions of his hits “Rocket Man,” “Crocodile Rock” and “Tiny Dancer.”

Before and after the event, gala guests including Hilary and Galen Weston Sr., artist Andrea Bolley (in a stunning Dsquared dress), Joe Mimran and Kimberley Newport-Mimran toasted the night away amidst a sea of festooned performers and fabulous dressers. Fierce is not a fierce enough descriptor for a night which certainly followed through on the glitter, the light and a whole lotta love.
