5 Women on Netflix Making a Difference from Behind the Camera
These television series were made by women for women.
The movement for gender equity in Hollywood often falls on the famous faces we see in front of the camera. But behind these brave, outspoken celebrities — and the inspiring heroines they play onscreen — are the women who create and define iconic female characters for film and television. In order for us to see the “female-driven” and “female-lead” stories we seek in our entertainment, we need to allow more women to create, envision, direct and tell the stories they care about. There is a desperate need for onscreen representation, but there is a corresponding need for gender diversity behind-the-scenes.
In commemoration of International Women’s Day, we teamed up with Netflix to celebrate the game-changing women in film and television that aren’t always visible. These female writers, producers directors and show-runners deliver compelling, complex and empowering stories season after season, all while paving the way for women of the future.
