Today, one of our favourite royals and style icons turns 30 years old. Happy birthday, Kate Middleton! While there are rumours of celebrations at a private ‘80s-themed party tonight, yesterday the duchess was in the public eye—on the red carpet at the War Horse London premiere. (And most of us would certainly accept that black lace Temperley dress as an early birthday present!)
So, what’s it like to turn 30 when you’re royalty? We suspect that when you’re the future queen consort of England, you have other things to worry about aside from getting older. (Producing an heir and fulfilling royal duties, to name a few!) We take a look back at what Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana were doing on their big birthdays, and look ahead at what Kate will be up to this year.

When she turned 30 in 1956, Queen Elizabeth had already been reigning for four years. Married at 21 to Prince Philip, the public was satisfied with their need for an heir (and a spare!) long before she was crowned: Prince Charles and Princess Anne were already toddlers, and Prince Edward and Prince Andrew were soon to follow. Young Lilibet spent much of her time travelling, and, like Kate, had some red carpet moments: a few months after her 30th birthday she met Marilyn Monroe in London.

Things were about to get messy for Princess Di in 1991 when she turned 30: after 10 years of marriage to Prince Charles, they were about to announce their separation. With William and Harry both away at school, Diana devoted almost all of her attention to charity work, expanding beyond the typical set of royal organizations to work with leprosy and AIDS patients as well as at-risk youth, the homeless, and drug addicts. Also worth noting: in 1991, Diana, Charles, William, and Harry came for a royal visit to Canada!

Kate is starting off her thirties with many a good deed. Last week she announced the charities she’ll be supporting as royal patron: the Art Room, National Portrait Gallery, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice, and Action on Addiction. There’s also more travel to come throughout the year, with Will and Kate heading to Malaysia, Singapore, Solomon Islands, and Tuvalu. The Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations are both happening in London this summer, so Kate may be busy enough to keep those baby rumours at bay, at least until she’s 31.
