Brie Larson Opens Up About Her Quiet Reaction to Casey Affleck’s Oscar Win

When Brie Larson presented Casey Affleck with the Oscar for “Best Actor” last month, her quiet reaction to his win didn’t go unnoticed.

Larson, whose role as a sexual assault victim in Room won her the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2016, made it a point to not clap for the actor, who was sued by two women for alleged sexual harassment in 2010. (The lawsuit was settled out of court and Affleck has since denied the allegations.)

According to Larson, her response was intentional.

“I think that whatever it was that I did onstage kind of spoke for itself,” the 27-year-old actress told Vanity Fair. “I’ve said all that I need to say about that topic.”

Larson had a similar reaction when presenting the Manchester by the Sea star a Golden Globe earlier in the year. Fortunately for her, she did not have to present the SAG Award for “Best Actor” to Affleck, as it was Denzel Washington who took home the award for his performance in Fences.

Since his Oscar win, 41-year-old Affleck has spoken out on the sexual assault allegations in an interview with the Boston Globe.

“I believe that any kind of mistreatment of anyone for any reason is unacceptable and abhorrent, and everyone deserves to be treated with respect in the workplace and anywhere else,” he said, noting that both sides involved in the lawsuit are legally prohibited from speaking about the case. “There’s really nothing I can do about it, other than live my life the way I know I live it and to speak to what my own values are and how I try to live by them all the time.”

As for Brie, she’s continuing to use her celebrity platform to support and advocate for victims and survivors of sexual violence, having recently sported a red Oscar de la Renta dress to the premiere of her new film, Kong: Skull Island, on International Women’s Day. The choice of colour for her ensemble was meant to be an act of solidarity for the thousands of women around the world who took to the streets on March 8, wearing the colour to support Women’s March on Washington’s Day Without Women movement.

Thank you Los Angeles!!! ??? @kongskullislandmovie #internationalwomensday
