Up there with a visit to Vogue’s closet and a budget-less Prada shopping spree, getting intimate with a bunch of tutus is one of the quintessential fashion dreams. Last month, we got to live ours with Marjory Fielding, wardrobe supervisor at the National Ballet of Canada, when she took us on a tour of the costume department while prepping for this season’s production of Nijinsky. The ballet tells the story of legendary Vaslav Nijinsky, who revolutionized dance in his roles with the Ballet Russes in the early 20th century. The ballet includes many recreations of Nijinsky’s famed costumes, including the Golden Slave from Scheherazade, the Spirit of the Rose from Le Spectre de la rose and the Faun in L’Après-midi d’une faune, all designed off original sketches by costumer Léon Baskt dating back as far as the 1910s. And while none are, in fact, tutus, Fielding was kind enough to let us roam the Ballet’s storage rooms, where we found plenty to feast the eyes on, Nijinsky and otherwise.
