Alanis Morissette’s Ex-Manager Admits To Stealing $4.8 Million From The Singer
Alanis Morissette‘s former manager has admitted to stealing more than $6.5 million from the singer and other celebrities, and is pleading guilty to embezzlement, according to a statement from a California U.S. Attorney’s office.
The 42-year-old Canadian songstress filed a lawsuit against Jonathan Todd Schwartz, accusing him of taking money from her accounts without her knowledge. The suit was settled out of court in June, with Schwartz admitting to stealing $4.8 million from the “Ironic” singer from between May 2010 and January 2014.
According to the statement, the 48-year-old former member of GSO Business Management, LLC, falsely labelled the unauthorized cash withdrawals as “sundry/personal expenses” on the account records GSO maintained for Morissette. When he was confronted about the missing funds, he stated the money was an investment in illegal marijuana “grow business.” Schwartz has since admitted that statement was false.
He is being charged with “fraud and subscribing to a false tax return for failing to disclose the embezzled funds to the Internal Revenue Service.”
Schwartz is expected to appear in court on Feb. 1 to enter a guilty plea, which will most likely have him sentenced to four to six years in federal prison instead of the maximum 23.
