Any fan of Schitt’s Creek (so, everyone, no?) will fondly remember Alexis Rose’s audition for Cabaret. Full of confidence, Alexis performed the title track off her critically reviewed limited reality series A Little Bit Alexis for Moira and Jocelyn – whilst actress and former FASHION cover star Annie Murphy simultaneously blessed us with one of the best scenes in television history.
It’s no secret that Schitt’s Creek has been providing much needed lightness for people in recent weeks. And now, people’s love for the show, and the aforementioned scene in particular, has spread to TikTok. Users have been uploading videos of themselves recreating the performance, with many also dressed to mimic Alexis’ babydoll mini and knee high boots.
Speaking with Uproxx about how she feels about becoming an internet sensation, Murphy said, “Anything that can put smiles on faces right now, is so wonderful.” She also revealed more about how the song came to life.
As it turns out, upon seeing that Alexis was to perform in the script, she asked Dan levy if she could write the song. “I think I was inspired / jealous of Noah [Reid], who the previous season, did his beautiful arrangement of Simply the Best. I was like, “I want to do that too.” Not remembering that Noah is an incredibly talented musician, and I am not. I kind of bit off a little bit more than I could chew.”
Pushing forward, Murphy teamed up with two musician friends and “listened to a ton of Britney Spears, as you can probably tell,” says Murphy. “We listened to Work Bitch, on repeat. We knew that it was a jokey spoof song, but deep down, all three of us were so desperate to write a banger. So, we kind of just pulled out all the stops and we just went for it.”
Once it was ready, she sent the track to Levy. “I finally sent it to Dan and didn’t hear anything. I was like, ‘Oh, f***. He’s going to give this job to Noah instead.’ And then he just wrote back, ‘I’m obsessed with this.’ Which is kind of the highest form of flattery from Dan.”
And thus, A Little Bit Alexis was born. If you need a pick-me-up today, download TikTok and search the hashtag #alittlebitalexis. We promise you won’t be disappointed.
