The 2020 BAFTA Awards Nominations Are In

There’s plenty of recognizable names and films on the list.

Hot off the heels of Sunday’s Golden Globe awards, the nominees for the 2020 BAFTA Awards have been revealed this morning.

The noms look much the same as this week’s ceremony with the Joker1917, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time...in Hollywood and Martin Scorcese’s The Irishman all landing several nods. In fact, Tarantino’s latest film scored a huge 10 nominations, tying with Scorcese’s new mob movie.

Margot Robbie received two nominations in the Best Supporting Actress category – one for her role in Once Upon A Time...in Hollywood and one for Bombshell. She will go up against Laura Dern (who took home the Golden Globe for Marriage Story), Scarlett Johansson (Jojo Rabbit) and Florence Pugh (Little Women). Johansson also received two nominations, scoring a Best Leading Actress nod for her part in Marriage Story, too.

Unfortunately, the nominations also mimic the Globes in their lack of diversity – all the actor categories feature only white stars, and there are no female directors nominated in the director category. According to CNN, Marc Samuelson, the chairman of BAFTA’s film committee, called the results “infuriating” saying, “Clearly everybody knows that everybody in the four acting groups of nominees are white, it’s infuriating. We can’t make the industry do something, all we can do is encourage and push and inspire and try to help people coming in at the bottom end.” Amanda Berry, the chief executive of BAFTA, also described her disappointment at the list for its lack of inclusion, but added that it “was not to take anything away from the people who have been nominated.” She elaborated, “We do have 13 directors nominated who are females across other categories, and this is what gives me joy and hope actually, six female directors in the shorts category and that is the category where we are really seeing talent at the start of their career and they are the industry of the future, but we are going to do more, we are not going to stop pushing.”
