Everything We Know about the Call Me By Your Name Sequel
Like whether or not Timmy and Armie will be back
While the COVID-19 pandemic means we can’t *physically* travel to Italy at the moment, we can still dream of the Italian countryside; and now, you can include some familiar faces in your daydreams. Luca Guadadgnino, the director of the hit 2017 film Call Me By Your Name, has confirmed that there will be a sequel and yes, Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer will be reprising their roles!
CMBYN, based on the novel of the same name by author André Aciman, followed 17-year-old Elio (Chalamet) and 24-year-old Oliver (Hammer) as they spent a summer together in Italy in the 1980s. There was first love, there was passion, there was, of course, heartbreak, all set to the absolutely sob-inducing tunes of Sufjan Stevens.
And we are *absolutely* stoked for round two. Why wouldn’t we be? Show me a human who isn’t thrilled about the opportunity to watch a buff, gold-chain wearing Hammer whisper “Oliver” into the ear of a puppy-eyed Chalamet, lovelorn and with a jawline that could legit draw blood, and I will show you a liar.
Call Me By Your Name was a literal work of art, and we’re expecting nothing less from the sequel. Here, everything we know about the upcoming film.
Call Me By Your Name 2 will be based on the second novel by author André Aciman
The CMBYN sequel will be adapted from the second novel by author Aciman, Find Me. Taking place 10 years after the original, Find Me (which was released in October 2019), catches up with Elio, Oliver and Elio’s father, Professor Samuel Perlman, a decade after we last saw them.
The book itself is split up into three stories: Professor Perlman, as he travels from Florence to Rome a decade after the original film; Elio, as he lives and studies piano in Paris 15 years after CMBYN, and Oliver, as he lives and teaches in New England, almost 20 years after the OG story. All three characters and stories overlap and SPOILER ALERT: there will be tears (but that’s pretty much a given with anything in the CMBYN cinematic universe).
We’re excited to see how this translates onto the big screen!

Speaking to Italian newspaper La Républica on March 30, Call Me By Your Name director Guadadgnino confirmed that much of the cast will be back for the CMBYN sequel—and yes, that means leads Chalamet and Hammer will be gracing our screens as star crossed lovers once more. “Of course, it was a great pleasure to work with Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Esther Garrel and the other actors,” Guadadgnino said in the interview. “Everyone will be in the new movie.”
FYI, Stuhlbarg and Garrel played Elio’s dad and love interest, respectively, in the first film.
The sequel to Call Me By Your Name is currently on hold
As excited as we are at this recent CMBYN news, fans will have to wait awhile before we actually see the IRL film. Like many things right now, the film has been temporarily halted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the same interview with La Républica, Guadadgnino revealed that he was in the process of securing a screenwriter for the sequel when everything started to go awry due to the coronavirus. “Before coronavirus, I made a trip to the United States to meet a screenwriter I love very much, whose name I don’t want to say, to talk about the second part. Unfortunately, we had to put it on hold,” Guadadgnino said.
While unfortunate (but obviously necessary) that the film is at a standstill for now, Guadadgnino *did* spill the slightest of tea for us to salivate over. We now know that the Italian director is hoping to work with a beloved American screenwriter, and PLEASE, for the love of God, let it be Greta Gerwig!!
