Met Gala 2017: The 10 Most Outrageous Looks on the Red Carpet

The glitz! The glam! The gowns!

The Met Gala is fashion’s biggest night—take the Oscars and the Super Bowl and multiple that by 100, and you’ve got the picture.

Besides the insane eye candy (A-list celebs in custom couture gowns? Bring it), the annual fundraising gala benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York. It also marks the grand opening of the annual fashion exhibition, and this year’s theme didn’t disappoint: Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between.

The legendary Japanese designer, now in her 70s, is known for her avant-garde, conceptual looks. Wearable art on the red carpet? Yes, please!

Celebs don’t always stick to the Met Gala’s theme (last year’s standouts at Manus x Machina: Fashion in An Age of Technology included, Claire Danes Zac Posen gown with LED lights and Kim Kardashian’s silver metallic Balmain armour dress), but when they do it’s fashion magic. And tonight, a handful of mega stars went big—literally.

Katy Perry, this year’s co-chair and host of the evening, brought the fire in a crimson red custom Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano wool coat layered over a matching tulle and chiffon gown sparkling with embellishment. A veil and a headdress completed this fab OTT look. Pharrell Williams’ wife (and new mama to triplets) Helen Lasichanh opted for red, too, with a voluminous Comme des Garçons jumpsuit that looked like it was filled with air. Other celebs wearing statement CDG looks include Tracee Ellis Ross (cobalt blue sculptural dress) and Caroline Kennedy (oversized, multi-tiered floral design).

Solange Knowles opted for a sleek puffer look (is spring the new winter?) by Thom Browne, while Priyanka Chopra’s tricked-out Ralph Lauren trench coat gown is the ultimate spring fling, thanks to its supersized popped collar and sweeping train. Nicki Minaj created a flashbulb frenzy, too, in her bold Japanese-inspired custom H&M look, featuring a satin kimono top, a long train and an obi belt with Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo’s face on it.

Then there’s Rihanna. Our girl gives good theme. This year, she wowed in a conceptual CDG look covered in floral-print petals. Needless to say, jaws dropped everywhere, but for RiRi, it’s just another day, another slay.

We’ve rounded up the top 10 most outrageous looks from this year’s Met Gala. Check out our gallery below—don’t you just love it when fashion blows your mind?
