From modern muffs to cheeky bags, it’s best to pack your sense of humour when embracing Fall 2014 accessories trends. This season, statement making was left up to the details with an onslaught of wild accoutrements.

Fast food got a high fashion makeover at Moschino, where our favourite McDonalds menu items were transformed. Echoing the larger than life junk food dresses featured in Jeremy Scott’s first collection for the brand, a Happy Meal container became a purse, French fries turned into a cellphone case and SpongeBob SquarePants was the backpack muse du jour. 3.1 Phillip Lim called a spade a spade, embossing “Cash” on the side of a lunch bag style clutch. And for Karl Lagerfeld, what could be more unique than a milk carton given a quilted Chanel treatment or a Fendi purse bobble created in his likeness?

Our calves continue to get a work out with fashion’s infatuation with chunky shoes. Dior envisioned a running shoe/high heel hybrid while Marni created a heavy-soled oxford and knee-high boots popped up on the runways of Versace and Gucci.

Contrasting such quirkiness, jewellery was kept streamlined and strong. The ladies from The Craft would be proud to see the many chokers that have reclaimed their place in fashion. Whether it’s the sculpted metal choker at Altuzarra or the black velvet statement maker at Erdem, the nineties staple has made its comeback in a modern way.

Also being modernized for Fall 2014 fashion is the muff. While our hands may be glued to our cellphones, we’re looking to stuff our palms inside of the furry hand warmers as seen at Céline and Tory Burch. Put down the phone, if only for fashion!
