The red carpet brought out three great hairstyles this past week: Rooney Mara’s side-parted bangs, Scarlett Johansson’s retro updo, and Sandra Bullock’s long, shiny locks. On a scale of easy to impossible, Bullock’s style is one you can achieve as quickly as it takes for your flatiron to heat up—whereas you’d need a second set of hands (or more!) to master Johansson’s pinned-up curls. Just a few weeks ago, Rooney Mara was rocking a very short Lisbeth Salander fringe, so this slicked-back look at the premiere of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo should give anyone with bangs hope for a fresh holiday style. We’ll assume a lot of product went into Mara’s hair—but the deep-black shade can handle the extra sheen. To master this look on your own, start by applying a styling primer, such as KMS StyleBoost ($19, at select salons) to damp hair. Part and blow-dry your hair, brushing your bangs away from your face as you go. Spray a bit of hairspray on your fingers and pull your hair back into a low bun—you might have to repeat this a few times to get your bangs in line, but by applying hairspray to your fingers and not directly to your head you’ll avoid over-saturating your hair.
Scarlett Johansson’s style proved that Katy Perry is not the only one who can do retro hair on the red carpet. Her very complicated updo for the premiere of We Bought A Zoo likely makes use of multiple curling sponges (like a foam bun donut, but one long tube) to keep its perfect U-shape. If you want to attempt this style on your own, may we suggest skipping the all-around curl and instead pile a few voluminous rolls on the top of your head? Start with hair that was washed the day before and add some texture with dry shampoo—or, try our favourite, Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray ($39, oribe.com). Section off the front of your hair and wind into a huge curl with a curling iron. Tease lightly at the root and twist the curl into place, securing with bobby pins.
We’re used to seeing Sandra Bullock look a little more like Miss Congeniality on red carpets—with volume and movement in her hair when it’s down, and classic styles when it’s up. However, she totally pulls off sleek, straight hair with a centre part at the Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close premiere, and we hope to see more of it. To make your own hair look this slick, use a nourishing oil, such as L’Oreal Professionnel’s Mythic Oil ($24, ca.lorealprofessionnel.com) to cut down on any fizziness and amp up the shine. Apply 2–3 pumps to wet hair before you blow-dry. Use a flatiron to get your hair as straight as possible, and finish with an extra pump of Mythic Oil to lock in the style and add a bit of gloss.
