With Toronto Fashion Week behind us, we’re taking stock of all the beauty trends we saw backstage. From a nail art comeback to graphic white liner, Canadian designers gave us a lot to talk about.
One thing that came as a pleasant surprise was the resurgence of nail art. Last month in New York, London, Milan and Paris, we saw show after show with models walking down the runway with totally nude nails, or with just a hint of beige polish on. For a minute there we truly thought that nail art may be over, but that’s obviously not the case.
From the electric blue half-moon at Mackage to the pop art-inspired designs and shade combos at Hayley Elsaesser, it’s been a great week to be a nail art-lover.
On the makeup side, natural looks still had a definite presence on the runway, but we also saw some memorable makeup that we’re still talking about, like the extreme, doll-like lashes at Elan+Castor. There’s suddenly a lot on our beauty to-do list.
The doll-like eyes at Elan + Castor were achieved by applying a set of falsies on both the top and bottom lashes. Our fave part? This 60s-inspired look forgoes the typical graphic liner associated with the look for a more modern take.
One of the most memorable looks of the week was the glitter-covered scalps and two-toned pink lips combo at the Hayley Elsaesser Spring 2015 show. Fun fact: we spotted some of the models at an after party later that night still sporting the look and it’s surprisingly wearable. How’s that for hairspiration?

Mackage Spring 2015
essie Canada’s lead nail artist Rita Remark worked with negative space on these nails, opting to forgo the regular duo of shades and instead painted a dot of blue on bare nails. The result? A fresh, updated half-moon mani.
Double graphic liner at the Mikhael Kale show was one of our favourite eye looks all week. The black and white combo and matte skin made sure the look wasn’t too over-the-top.
The nails at Hayley Elsaesser Spring 2015 were just as interesting as the hair. The pop art-inspired mani plays with negative space, bright colours and a different design on each nail, for a look that’s surprisingly tied together quite seamlessly.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a pompadour! With natural, undone hair taking over the runways, the hair at Mikael D was fun and refreshing.
